On the morning of 9th December, more than 400 children in Kindy 4 and 5 from the Saigon Academy International School (SGA) attended Hoa Lu Stadium, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, to join the “SGA Sports Day”.
This activity is part of the project with the same name of SGA, as well as the next project in the chain of projects to help children with intensive learning that SGA has been implementing. Joining the “Sports Day”, the SGA students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience with seven games continuously re-enacting sports such as Australian football, golf, basketball, rugby, the ball sticks, hockey, cricket, and tennis.
Present at the event, Ms. Ma My Loan - Acting Chief Executive of Saigon Academy International School (SGA) shared:
“Nowadays, many parents feel anxious when their children are less active. I am also a parent, was also very worried about the thought of this. Our current environment is increasingly narrowing the playground of the children, many parents are too busy with their work and do not have time to take their children outside for the outdoor physical activities. Inhibition may have decreased the development of both physical and mental parts of children. In simple words, a child who practices a sport such as badminton or soccer, is certainly to have a better physical development. Since then, the child will be cheerful to learn with a cheery spirit. In contrast, a child who spent his/her time at home watching television or playing on the computer will lack interaction skills and become inactive. I say so to clarify the importance of physical activities for children and parents should understand this problem”.
So how can we create a playground for the children, can you tell more about the benefits of sports for the age of kindergarten?
- Science has proven that the period of 0-3 years old of children has the strongest development and serves as a prerequisite for the later stages. Especially in this period, children need to learn from the habits, the things that will form up important skills that will follow their life in the future. Physically, in the ages of 0-3 years old, the brain’s development of a child is almost complete, the thing that need to be concern is not “indoctrinate” the children but to let them experience and learn by themselves, only so everything will remain fresh for a longtime. Physical movement provides children with lots of things such as endurable health, enhancing resistance against disease, it is easy to realize it for those people who usually workout. In terms of education, especially early childhood education, many people still think sports are not so important. It is not true to think so. The significance of this practice is essential, because it not only helps children to build up physical strength but also realize their hobbies. Through the process of acts, children will have practical experience rather than seeing some pictures about some sports. The schools should provide children the chances to experience the real activities. Especially from the outdoor activities, interacting with the nature and other friends will help children to improve their communication skills, and express their personalities in an open space. In addition, the program also helps children know what they had and what they want in the future.
To accomplish the above targets, what has SGA implemented so far?
- At Saigon Academy International School, where pioneering “The Early Childhood Curriculum from the age 0” programwith flexible teaching methodologies, learning from the games, children will always be learning by playing and playing by learning, easy learning as playing, having fun but still learn a lot. SGA regularly organizes many activities for children with practical experience, for example, in the festival Open day, each project will have specific activities. For example, SGA is currently conducting the project "SGA Sports Day", children will learn about the sport, play, and contemplate the field game. Each school will have its own activities, appropriate for each grade level.
Can you explain more about the “SGA Sports Day”?
- With the project “SGA Sports Day”, from our perspective, the most useful methods for intellectual stimulation for children is to have fun in the right way. In the period between 0-3 years of age, through fun activities, children will develop their intelligence, followed by the forming of positive emotions, giving children the ability to integrate and basic social communication skills. Through this project, SGA expects to convey to the children the most basic knowledge such as: What is sport? Why do they have to play sports? How do they play sports with their friends at school?, … in a natural and fun way. Through the daily activities of the child such as: Go, run, jump, crawl, crawl, climb, ... "SGA Sports Day" will also form up children’s endurance, perseverance, ingenuity, confidence, teamwork, and give the children the opportunity to exchange with friends from the other campuses. In the “SGA Sports Day” this time, children will learn how to control their emotions, follow rules, take turns, share and teamwork. Children will also practice living skills – problem solving skills through distinguishing the movement patterns and familiarizing how to handle injuries. Observation and discovery skills will be enhanced when children practice to recognize the diversity of different sports types, sport equipment and stadiums. The project also helps children develop space intelligence, knowing how to orient the space through observing and remembering the mobilization posture. Someone has said, children are just like buds, they need the sun, fresh air and wind to rise into big trees. Certainly, the most important goal of our project "SGA Sports Day", including the happiness and greatest expectations of every parents, is to see the "little angels" to have “Fun to play – passionate to learn”, laugh a lot, grow up healthy, confident like the green buds and bursting shoots.
Attending at the “SGA Sports Day”, Ms. Kim – the mother of young Alunan Ngo Colin (4 years old, studying at SGA Tran Nhat Duat campus) shared: “I am very satisfied with the activities of SGA as well as the result of my son after joining those activities. My child is a little bit more special than the others because at home, I and my husband use English to interact with him, I want my child to come to school to learn Vietnamese and in order to improve living skills, knowledge is definitely acquired when my son is mature, but not every school will help children to get used to the important skills. Through a short time learning and participating in the activities of SGA, my kid has become so different which is beyond my imagination. Many parents have told me that they had to transfer their children from school to school before SGA, which makes me feel so lucky that I made the right choice at the beginning.
The “SGA Sports Day” will take place in 6 weeks from 14th November to 23rd December.
